European Federation for Biotechnology

EFB

SCI was one of the founding members of the EFB and provided one of its three secretariats between 1978 and 2005. After a brief lapse, this partnership has now been restored with SCI becoming a UK Regional Branch Office in 2011. SCI brings considerable strength to the EFB with its close links to the chemical industry. SCI in turn will promote EFB activities via its website to SCI members with interests in biotechnology. This will greatly stimulate SCI activities in the biotechnology arena, which is of timely importance to a chemical society as oil based chemicals are gradually supplemented with biologically-produced chemicals.

The first tangible product of this link was SCI support for the launch meeting Synthetic Biology meeting in Barcelona in February 2012. This meeting was organised by staff in the EFB Central Office, and there is the possibility of a future meeting being held in the UK.

Conversely, the EFB will promote SCI activities in the area of biotechnology to its current 12,000 members. Every member of SCI is now eligible for free Personal Membership of the EFB, and may apply via the link below.
