Brian Kelly Award

Carbon Fullerene C60

Brian Kelly Award – Established 1996

This annual award from the British Carbon Group was established in 1996 in memory of Brian Kelly, an authority on graphite physics. Brian worked with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and its successor company, AEA Technology plc for most of his career before ending with an all-too-brief period as Visiting Professor at Bath University School of Materials. The fund which provides this award was established by his friends and colleagues following his untimely death.

The award in the form of a travel grant is given to students or young researchers to attend the International Carbon Conference. The grant in the amount of GB£500 is presented at the time of the conference. The award is made upon the basis of an appraisal of three documents:

  • The extended abstract or paper as submitted to the C2011 conference,
  • A short CV (with the date of the award of PhD if applicable) and
  • A commentary provided normally by the candidate's supervisor or close colleague.

Self-nomination is not permitted. The Award Committee of the British Carbon Group will determine the successful applicant.

Eligible candidates must be students or young researchers attending the conference and who must present their paper orally or as a poster. They must not reside or work in the country hosting the conference.

The closing date for nominations: 30 April 2012. No submissions after this date will be accepted.
