About RSS Feeds

RSS feeds

RSS (real simple syndication) feeds let you keep up to date with your favourite websites without having to visit them. Excepts from their sites come to you instead. An RSS feed is made up of titles and short summaries of news items, with links to the full content.

Your computer will let you know when a new feed is available.

How do I use RSS feeds?

  1. Choose (and install) a feed reader you want to use (see below). You may need to set up a user account.
  2. Surf the web, or use Feed Factory to find an RSS feed that interests you.
  3. Subscribe to the feed. This works differently for different readers - you may be able to drag and drop the orange RSS button to your reader. Or copy the address of the feed from your browser's address bar (eg Internet Explorer or Firefox). Paste this into your reader. You may need to set up a new feed or 'channel' first.
  4. Check your feed reader regularly to see if there is any new or interesting content.
  5. When you find something of interest, click the link in the reader to go straight to the page in your browser.
  6. And that's it! Of course, you can repeat the subscription step for all the other feeds you want.

The most popular news readers

You can choose from a wide range of news readers and new versions are being developed all the time. Each operating system has its own readers, so chose one that works with your computer.
