Overview of formulation chemistry and biodelivery
Dr David Stock (Syngenta, Jealott's Hill) presented an overview of the formulation of crop protection chemicals at Syngenta on 8 February 2011. The aim is to effectively and safely deliver an active ingredient to the target crop or pest. Formulation science and technology continues to increase in complexity. Latest developments include triggered release whereby a stimulus, eg a change in pH or temperature, causes encapsulated active ingredient to be released when it will be most effective. Adjuvants may be added separately to achieve many effects, especially greater activity. Designing such adjuvants requires knowledge of how chemicals move into and through crop leaves and pest targets.
