Group awards

The following awards are offered by the group:

  • The Sir Eric Rideal Lecture recognises and honours an individual who has made a sustained and distinguished contribution to colloid and interface science in the UK, and was founded in 1970. The recipient will receive the Award as the culmination of a one-day scientific meeting organised around them. More
  • The McBain Medal is an annual award established by SCI's Colloid and Surface Chemistry Group and the RSC's Colloid and Interface Chemistry Group to honour a younger scientist who has made a meritorious contribution to colloid and interface science - expanding beyond the traditional boundaries of the field to include those applying colloid and interface science in areas such as physics, engineering and biological, medical, formulation, polymer, 'nano' and 'soft matter' science. To be eligible, the candidate should be in the earlier stages of their scientific career, typically within 15 years of attaining their doctorate (or equivalent degree), and will have advanced the science or technology of the field in a significant way. More
  • Rideal Travel Bursaries offered by the Sir Eric Rideal Trust (managed jointly by the RSC and SCI) are offered twice per year, as per the above schedule, to promising academic research workers in the general field of colloid and surface science to attend conferences and/or to visit relevant research institutions. Awards of up to GB£400 will be made, on a competitive basis, to assist with travel and/or subsistence and/or conference registration at conferences. The bursaries are named after Sir Eric Rideal. • The Graham Lectureship is a Mid Career Award established to fill the gap between the McBain Medal for younger scientists and the Sir Eric Rideal Lecture for those who have made a distinguished and sustained contribution to colloid and interface scientists. Typically it will be awarded to those who are in the prime of their research careers, having established an international reputation in colloid science, have already made distinguished contributions to the field of colloid science and with the prospect of a further 15+ years of active research to come. It will be awarded triennially at the Colloids UK meeting. More
