The SCI Fire Chemistry Technical Interest Group began as a discussion group for individuals working in the field of fire chemistry. This discussion group outgrew its original boundary and became a full-fledged Special Interest Group in its own right soon after.

The Fire Chemistry Group exists to promote research and development in fire science, specifically fire chemistry, by providing a forum for the discussion of pure and applied research in these areas. Emphasis is placed on holding regular meetings to encourage the discussion of ongoing research and its broader applications, particularly among younger scientists. The Group has Members at all levels in this niche speciality, from industrialists to academics, and from researchers to students.
