Lipids

rape field

The SCI Lipids (formerly Oils and Fats) Technical Interest Group is now a select group of some 80 or so members whose interest lies in the science and technology of oils and fats, whether related to processing or nutrition or both. This is the only forum in the UK to specialise in this field, and it also represents the UK on the board of EuroFedLipid which is the umbrella organisation for Lipids groups around Europe (see below).

The Group Committee continues to focus its efforts on the organisation of meetings which will be of interest to the majority of the members. However, we would be pleased to receive any feedback you may have on how we could increase the benefits of membership to you all.

  • The Group has also joined with other SCI Groups in the Agriculture, Horticulture and Food sectors to form the Agri-Food Hub.

Developments

The group continues to organise conferences on an annual basis.

In May 2011 we held a successful meeting on Enzymatic Modification of oils and fats which was held in collaboration with the University of Ghent in Belgium. In June 2012 we are looking forward to hosting a two- day meeting on the 'Science and Technology of Food Emulsions'. This will include a number of international speakers, including Professor Julian McClements from the University of Massachusetts who will be presenting this year's Hildich Memorial Lecture.

We have also run or contributed to a number of smaller events. A public evening lecture held in September 2011 on 'The Redemption of the British Breakfast' stirred a vigorous debate over the role of saturated fats in health.

Euro Fed Lipid

The Lipids Technical Interest Group has now been a member of the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids (EFL) since 2002. EFL is the main umbrella organisation serving Lipids related societies and organisations throughout Europe. The main function of EFL is a three-day annual conference in the Autumn of each year (EuroFedLipid). This serves to showcase developments in lipids research and technology mainly with a European focus but also with a significant global input. EFL also serves to coordinate activities of its member organisations.

Members of the SCI Lipids Group are automatically members of EFL. Special print subscription rates are available for its official journal, The European Journal of Lipid Science & Technology. Although we have received some generous donations to allow our members to continue to enjoy membership of EFL at no cost to themselves, it would be very useful if we could obtain some UK company sponsorship for EFL. We will continue to keep you informed of any developments between the SCI and the EFL.

Lipids Group members play a major role in the ISO and CEN Committees which deal with oils and fats, oilseeds and their by-products. Anyone who is interested in becoming involved in standardisation would be most welcome.
