The Science and Enterprise Group (SEG) aims to mobilise wide and diverse expertise to develop a unique cross-disciplinary and cross-sector network to forge new links to accelerate innovation: the successful exploitation of new ideas.

SEG will spearhead the delivery of SCI’s promise to be where science meets business.

Enthusiastic new members are welcomed. You don’t have to organise conferences – those with knowledge and opinions to share and good connections are also valuable, so if you would like to get involved in a Focus Area, contact SCI’s Communications Team, E: communications@soci.org, T: +44(0)20 7598 1564, F: +44 (0)20 7598 1545.

Networks

Successful networks bring together know-what, know-how and know-who, and real innovations are usually found when the boundaries between knowledge silos are blurred. SEG reaches across and between SCI’s Technical Interest Group remits to address particular Focus Areas. Initially these include: Transportation, Energy, Consumer Products, Packaging, Renewable Resources, Chemical Industry, Health & Nutrition, Processing, Horticulture, Water, Textiles and Fibres, Printed Electronics, Smart Materials and the Innovation Process. Where possible these Focus Areas will be facilitated, but ultimately they must be sustained by the proactive involvement of their members. Through a programme of networking and seminar activities arising from the Focus Areas, SEG will offer opportunities for members to connect with the facts and people they need. Importantly, SEG is a route to valuable knowledge about areas members might only come across by networking with like-minded people, but from different backgrounds.

Objectives

SEG has three key objectives:

  • Organise a programme of activities and events which will attract participants from science and business to create and sustain a network with a unique richness and reach.
  • Develop participation which will include a broad range of business and science based experience, spanning commerce, industry and appropriate academic sectors and spin-offs.
  • Create awareness of SCI’s SEG and its promise amongst stakeholders including government organisations, opinion formers and business leaders, and build alliances where appropriate.

Leadership Group

SEG is led by a Leadership Group which arranges a programme of events, within which a small committee of Officers will coordinate and manage the working of the Group. The Leadership Group comprises a diverse range of individuals including representatives from many SCI Technical Interest Groups, and from other SCI projects such as the Global Innovation Imperatives, to ensure engagement through SCI’s portfolio of interests. The Leadership Group is advised and facilitated by a larger Strategic Advisory Group providing ideas for topics, opinions, access to speakers, occasional involvement in event organisation and opening partnering opportunities.

You can read our Chairman’s message to learn more about the Group and we are always pleased to receive suggestions for new conferences and other activities via our Forum.
