A number of events are being set up by SCI's Regional and Technical Groups for Early Career Scientists. Keep an eye on our events calendar and make the most of support being offered to PhD students, postdocs, and those starting out in industry or academia.

The Ion Exchange Conferences (IEX) have been held on a regular four-year cycle in Cambridge since 1976. This year's conference will be preceded by three training courses on ion exchange in industrial water treatment and in bioprocessing.

As voted by Members at the 2011 Annual General Meeting, annual membership fees are now £90 for Standard Membership and £25 for Student Membership.

At the Board's annual planning day on 21 September 2011, we reviewed our strategic direction and rolling three-year plan, and realigned our priorities for the future.

SCI's Board of Trustees has decided that SCI should undertake a thorough review of its awards programme. During 2012, we are therefore cutting back the distribution of awards to a minimum until the review is completed.

The prestigious international medal, the Carl Hanson Award, is jointly awarded by SCI and DECHEMA every three years to an eminent scientist in the field of solvent extraction.

On 16 September 2010, SCI hosted a free Public Evening Lecture featuring Fred Pearce, who is currently the environment consultant of New Scientist magazine and a regular contributor to British newspapers.

Separation technology is fundamental to all chemical production processes. The separation techniques used are common to a range of industries and are continuously developing.

Ion exchange is one of the basic separation and purification technologies of modern industry. The SCI IEX Conferences began in 1954 and have been established as one of the major international conferences for the ion exchange community.

The purpose of this meeting was to provide an update into these new ligands and demonstrate the utility of this technique in a process environment. We reviewed new areas of application for mixed mode chromatography in the bioseparations industries and the complementarity of this approach to established chromatographic processes.
