Committee workshop and best practice sharing
On Monday, 28 September 2009, we hosted a one-day ‘Volunteer
Workshop and Best Practice’ day for the Honorary
Chairmen, Secretaries and Treasurers of all its UK-based
Interest Groups. This event provided an
opportunity for the leaders of SCI’s Committees to
meet one another, build relationships between
their respective Groups and share their common
issues and interests through interactive best
practice discussions.
The first such event was
held in 2008, and feedback collated from those who attended last year was overwhelmingly positive.
Committee members felt it was ‘a really useful day,
but also motivational (and) encouraging’. Over 80%
of those who attended felt that they had gained
significant benefit from attending.
This year’s event is designed to build on this
success and promises to be equally informative,
interactive and motivational. The day will start with
a brief overview of how the Society has changed
structurally, and how this has affected the activities
of various departments that have an interface
with our Committees, including membership,
conferences, web and awards. The launch of SCI’s
new website will be just one of the new tools that
will be introduced.
The workshop sessions for the Chairmen,
Secretaries and Treasurers will follow, enabling
our attendees to discuss this overview in greater
depth within smaller groups, so that they can touch
specifically on the areas that relate to their roles
within their respective Committees.
Discussions took place in the afternoon around
topics such as:
- Events in a recession
- Using online forums to generate event ideas and bring in volunteers
- How to make the best of your SCI service.
