Celebrating an SCI stalwart

Dinner for Lampitt Medal winner Prof Alan Heaton
London, 22 September 2004

Prof Alan HeatonAn evening of fine food and company will be enjoyed by Prof Alan Heaton and friends at the Lampitt Medal Dinner on 22 September 2004. The celebration, taking place at SCI’s London Headquarters, is to be given in thanks for Prof Heaton’s 30 years of enthusiastic and loyal work at SCI. The event is always a pleasant occasion, and all are welcome to attend.

The medal honours Members who have offered their time, leadership, vision and enthusiasm to SCI. It is named after Leslie Herbert Lampitt (1887–1957), a brewing specialist, who created what in many ways were the world’s first specialist food laboratories. He also gave an enormous amount of time to developing SCI and held many offices in the Society, including the World Presidency from 1946–1948.

A true Society stalwart, Prof Heaton is a Member of Council and has chaired the Liverpool Section twice. He has been an active Member of the Awards and Section Support Committees and has chaired selection panels for SCI scholarships and travel bursaries. Prof Heaton has helped implement the Distinguished Service Award scheme and made numerous contributions to the Liverpool Section.

Professor of Chemical Education at Liverpool John Moores University, Prof Heaton’s teaching areas encompass organic and industrial chemistry and transferable skills. His main research is in the preparation and reactivity of compounds used as potential drugs and pesticides.

Prof Heaton has directed the SCI Liverpool Schools/Industry project for local school children, helping to reverse the decline of young people taking science, engineering and technology courses at universities. He has published books on industrial chemistry and contributes to the Royal Society of Chemistry. But it’s not all work. Prof Heaton is a keen sportsman, competing and winning cups in competitive crown green bowling, playing golf and swimming.
