Materials Research Society
2004 Fall meeting
Boston, USA, 29 November
- 3 December 2004. Report by Messel Travel Bursar Olivier Cayre
I would like to thank the Society of Chemical Industry for
awarding me a travel grant to attend the 'Fall' meeting of
the American Materials Research Society.
The conference was held in Boston (Massachusetts) from 29
November to 3 December and I participated in the first four
days of the conference. I presented a poster entitled 'Fabrication
of Novel Types of Colloidosome Microcapsules for Drug Delivery
Applications' in collaboration with colleagues (Dr V. N. Paunov
in particular) from our group in the University of Hull as
well as other co-workers (Dr R. G. Alargova, Prof O. D. Velev)
based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina
State University, in Raleigh, USA.

During the poster session I was able to discuss my work with
scientists based in Europe and in the USA and to exchange
ideas with them. This may facilitate a collaborative project
between chemists at a European company and our group at the
University of Hull.
The rest of the conference gave me the opportunity to learn
about recent developments in the research area of Materials
and more particularly about Biomaterials, for example the
application of the self-recognising properties of DNA for
the preparation of self-assembling materials or the fabrication
of biocompatible delivery systems.
These specific topics are of great interest to me as I intend
to pursue my academic career in this area. Being able to attend
this conference was a very constructive use of time and gave
me the chance to settle on subjects I would like to work on
in the future.
The rest of the week was spent in the State University of
North Carolina. In Raleigh, our group participated in the
Colloidal and Nanoscale Engineering Workshop at the Department
of Chemical Engineering, where the group of Prof Velev, which
we collaborate with, is based. I was able to give an oral
presentation on some of the research work I'm involved with
at Hull. We were also able to learn more about different subjects
that this group works on. It was a great pleasure to discuss
these matters with both students and academics from this group
and exchange point of views and ideas on each other's research
areas.
Overall, this was a very beneficial journey and gave me the
chance to learn more about research areas that I was unfamiliar
with, extend my knowledge on some areas that I already deal
with, and to present results I've obtained in the past year
to fellow scientists and discuss their possible impact with
them.
I would like to thank SCI for partially sponsoring me at
this event and to giving me the opportunity to attend.
