Lecture brings food engineering into focus

Food Engineering Group 10th Seligman Lecture Glasgow, Scotland

José Miguel Aguilera

The 10th Seligman Lecture was held on 13 July 2005 at the World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Glasgow, Scotland. José Miguel Aguilera, professor of food and chemical engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile was the keynote speaker. A leading authority on food engineering and food structure, his address, entitled ‘Food product engineering: building the right structures’ reviewed the history of materials science and paid tribute to the contributions of food engineering in the field.

Hall 1 of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre was packed to capacity for the lecture, which was introduced and chaired by Keshavan Niranjan, chair of the SCI Food Engineering Group and professor of food biosciences at the University of Reading. The audience included SCI General Secretary and Chief Executive Andrew Ladds, and the Chief Executive of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Trevor Evans. Andrew also presented Professor Aguilera with a certificate for his lecture.

The Seligman Lecture is named after Richard Seligman, who joined SCI in 1904. The Society’s Food Engineering Group is particularly indebted to Dr Seligman and is proud to be closely associated with the Seligman Lecture.

The Lecture is always given on a topic related in some way to food engineering. The lecture must always be advertised and open to the public because, like so many aspects of SCI’s activities, communicating a positive message of the benefits of applied science is a central concern.

Professor Aguilera began his career as a chemical and industrial engineer at the university where he is now a professor, before carrying out two Masters degrees and a PhD in North America. He is also a visiting professor at various US and European universities.

A member of the editorial board of numerous journals including Food Science and Technology and Journal of Food Process Engineering, Professor Aguilera has published several books and authored over 120 research papers.

He adds the title of Seligman Lecturer 2005 to a string of prestigious honours and awards, including 2005 recipient of the IFT Research & Development Award, Presidency of the International Association of Food Engineering and Food, and the Berger Distinguished Lecture in International Food Science.
