Professor Yury A. Zolotov has made a significant contribution to the field of solvent extraction. His work dealing with metal chelates extraction, extraction of anionic complexes, elaboration of new extractants, solvent extraction in analytical procedures are well-known in many countries. Dr. Zolotov is the author or co-author of 12 books on solvent extraction – monographs, textbooks and handbooks. He published several hundreds of research papers and presented many plenary, keynote and contributed lectures and papers at conferences.
His work has been mainly carried out under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Sciences, initially at the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry and latterly at the Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry where he rose to the position of Director. In addition he was appointed to a Chair in the Chemical Faculty of the Lomonosov Moscow University where he is currently head of the Analytical Chemistry Division.
His main activity was in the analytical field. Recognising the importance of both stereochemistry and nature of the ligand donor atoms on the ability for coordination led to the development of a number of new extractants. These included both 'simple' chelating and non-chelating ligands as well as more recently the macro-cyclic compounds such as: crown ethers; calixarenes; opoen chain polyethers (podands).
He has developed hybrid analytical methods based on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) separation and preconcentration. These methods are the result of very close combination of separation and determination steps, when properties of the extract influence on the measurement data. The hybrid methods are used in analytical control in industry, environmental protection and geology.
Over the years Professor Zolotov has played an important part in the recognition of LLE in the areas of analytical, industrial, and environmental chemistry. He has not only been active in research in these fields but has also been a strong ambassador for the technology having been for many years a member of the International Committee for Solvent Extraction; Chairman of the Commission on Liquid-Liquid of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was one of the Chairman of the Organising Committee for ISEC '88 in Moscow and was involved in organising the USSR national liquid-liquid extraction conferences from 1958-1998.
His eminence in a number of fields has been recognised by medals from the Austrian Society of Analytical Chemistry; the Japanese Institute of Oceanochemistry; the Russian Chemical Society (Mendeleev Gold Medal); Brno University (Czech Republic); as well as three USSR and Russian state prizes, and honorary membership of the Royal Society of Art and Science in Göteborg, Sweden and the Japanese Society of Analytical Chemistry.
Prof. Zolotov is undoubtedly a world class expert in solvent extraction and a pioneer in the subject.
- The Carl Hanson Medal commemorates the life and work of Professor Carl Hanson. Professor Hanson had a very important influence on the development and application of solvent extraction both in his research activities at the University of Bradford, U.K. and in his teaching of the subject. He had a very close connection with the International Solvent Extraction Conferences (ISEC) and was Secretary-General of the International Committee for Solvent Extraction (ICSE) from its formation in 1974 until his death. On his sudden death in 1985 at the age of 51, the Society of Chemical Industry in the U.K. and DECHEMA in Germany jointly sponsored a medal in his name to be awarded at each ISEC.
- Nominates for the 2005 medal were Prof. J.Y. Chen ( China ), Dr. J. Preston ( South Africa ), Prof. J.A. Rydberg ( Sweden ), Prof. L.L. Travlarides ( USA ) and Prof. Y.A. Zolotov ( Russia ). From these nominations, member of the ICSE chose Prof. Yury A. Zolotov as the Carl Hanson Medallist for 2005 in September at ISEC '05 in Beijing, China. Click here to see the previous winners
