Pacifichem Conference
Rideal bursar Alexander Orlov reports from the meeting held in Honolulu, USA
on
15 - 20 December, 2005
It was only after I arrived at the Pacifichem conference in Honolulu, Hawaii , that I realised how lucky I was to be there. Not only is this conference held only once in five years, the number of participants and number of sessions could well compete with American Chemical Society (ACS) meetings.
The Pacifichem conference was established to disseminate recent research results in the chemical sciences among chemists of the Pacific Rim countries, but European researchers are also made most welcome. As the major developments in my current research of photocatalysis are primarily coming from Japan , this was almost perfect for me.
I was anxious to ask questions to get the maximum benefit from the session I was attending, Preparation of New Functional Catalysts and Photocatalysts: Theoretical Analysis,
Characterisations, Reactivities and Applications.
It was an incredible conference in a beautiful environment, with an excellent
selection of speakers. I received many constructive comments about my
current research, which I will use in my future projects and in grant
proposal writing. I am very grateful to SCI for awarding me the Sir Eric
Rideal Travel Bursary. It is a wonderful award programme which makes a real
difference in the professional development of younger chemists!
