SCI awards: First annual SCI major awards event due later in 2006

Lampitt Medal

Society medal
The Messel and Society medals give way to the new SCI Science Communication, Mond and Science Education Awards which join SCI's longstanding Lampitt and Carl Hanson medals
The process of modernising the SCI awards structure has gained momentum. The first annual SCI major awards event will take place in either late November or early December 2006. This is an ambitious timetable but, with the help of SCI members, the society believes it can be achieved.

SCI is currently generating ideas for the event and potential venues. Input from SCI members is very welcome: for example, what kind of event do you think is likely to give maximum impact? What type of event would you be most willing to support? Monica Iglesias (details below) would welcome your thoughts.

Long-term awards plan
At present SCI is developing a detailed awards plan for the long term. The society will keep members informed of progress and the opportunity to feed back into the process will be available.

When considering the future of SCI awards and the most appropriate award nominees, it is worth remembering that the main aims behind the changes in the system are to bring a more modern approach to the conferment of awards and to gain maximum benefit and publicity for the Society, as well as the recipients and those nominating them. In addition, the changes will help integrate the awards structure with the SCI strategy and business plan.

SCI aims to make the first annual awards event memorable. Key to this aim is the selection of the most suitable nominees. SCI is reliant on its membership to assist in the nomination process. The new categories and a brief description of the appropriate qualifications and experience for nominees are set out below.

The first awards will concentrate on achievements by individuals, with three awards being given in the following categories:

The SCI Science Communication Award
This will be conferred for an outstanding and broad contribution to the promotion of public understanding of chemistry and related sciences.

The SCI Mond Award
The Mond Award will be awarded for significant achievement in the field of health and safety, relating either to the workplace or in the general context of public/consumer safety.

The SCI Science Education Award
The Science Education Award will be made for outstanding contribution to science education which has helped to bring science alive and encouraged young people to continue to study science.

The awards will all be conferred on the basis of competitive application/nomination and be awarded for outstanding individual/team/ corporate achievement in the field of chemistry and related sciences.

The nomination procedure has been designed to be as simple as possible, but some information will be required on all nominees and nominators to allow an informed and fair decision to be made. A nomination form is available from Monica Iglesias, Awards Co-ordinator, T: +44 (0) 20 7598 1505, F: +44 (0)20 598 1545, E: monica.iglesias[ at]soci.org

or can be downloaded from the online awards book. The following attributes will be taken into consideration and should be adequately demonstrated in the application:

  • Contribution and achievement;
  • Demonstration of effectiveness and impact;
  • Leadership and ambassadorial skills.

Nominations are not restricted to the UK or Europe and will be welcomed from anywhere around the globe. Nominations must be received by 12 May 2006.

SCI is also seeking sponsorship for the awards and anyone who would like further details can contact Steve Forsdick, T: +44(0)20 7878 2334, E: steve.forsdick[ at]tenalpspublishing.com
