Awards scheme focuses on raising the profile of science
SCI has modernised and extended
its established awards scheme to
reflect the Society’s commitment
towards raising awareness of
science, its education and groundbreaking
innovation.
Later in 2006, in London, SCI
will host the first ceremony to
celebrate the achievements of the
winners in its improved awards
programme.
The scheme will include the
presentation of six prestigious
awards in a rolling two-year
programme, including four
awards to be conferred for the
first time.
Two new categories encompass
three awards which recognise the
impact that people, teams and
companies within our industry
can have on society, and three
awards for progress in science,
technology and innovation. These
complement SCI’s Distinguished
Service Award and Lampitt Medal,
as well as many awards, scholarships
and bursaries presented
by the Society’s groups and
sections.
2006 awards
On 1 December, three awards, recognising
the contribution of individuals,
teams and companies, will
be presented:
- The SCI Science Education
Award For outstanding contribution to
science education which has helped
to bring science alive and encouraged
young people to study science.
- The SCI Science Communication
Award For an outstanding and broad contribution to the promotion of public
understanding of chemistry and
related sciences.
- The SCI Mond Award For significant achievement in the
field of health and safety relating
either to the workplace or in the
general context of public and
consumer safety. The award is
made in recognition of the work
of Ludwig Mond, one of SCI’s
founders.
Nominations for the 2006
awards have now closed. We
would like to thank all of
the members who contributed to
the process.
2007 awards
This will be followed, in 2007,
by the presentation of awards
to reflect progress in science,
technology and innovation:
- The SCI Environment Award For the significant improvement
in environmental understanding,
protection or performance as a
result of the creation and application
of science and technology in
any chemistry-related field, including
chemical engineering.
- The SCI Innovation Award For commercial application of innovation
that has brought benefit
internationally to consumers or
society in general.
- The SCI Society Award For distinguished achievement
in the establishment of new
chemistry-related science and
technology.
Further details of the event
and the nomination process for
the 2007 and 2008 awards will
soon be published in the Awards Book.
