SCI member takes prestigious award

Jennifer Clark receives 2007 Chemical Industry Young Ambassador Award

Jennifer ClarkSCI member Jennifer Clark, a 27-year-old environmental chemist, received the 2007 Chemical Industry Young Ambassador Award at the Chemical Industries Association’s (CIA) Awards Dinner held at the National Railway Museum in York, UK earlier this month.

Clark, who works for Eastman Chemical at its Peboc Division site in Llangefni, Anglesey, Wales, is a member of the SCI Liverpool and North West Regional Group and acts as deputy to the group’s chairman, Mike Pitts.

The Young Ambassador award is sponsored by the SCI, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the British Chemical Engineering Contractors’ Association and chemical company BASF, and organised by the CIA. It tests the ability, enthusiasm and leadership skills of young people working in the chemical industry and recognises individuals who can easily convey to others the importance of chemicals to all of us in everyday life.

The judges unanimously agreed that, coupled with her energy and enthusiasm, Clark’s confidence in the chemical industry and commitment to getting young people involved gave the perfect combination required to win this year’s award. Clark is already an active member of the CIA’s Young Person’s Network and plays a large part in carrying the excitement of the industry to schools and promoting it in her local community.

Collecting her award, Clark said: ‘I am looking forward to an exciting year ahead and hope I will make the most of this opportunity to not only raise the profile of the chemical industry to young people but to also represent the young people within the industry.’

With this in mind, Clark will be representing Eastman on the SCI Youth Panel at the annual meeting in Budapest, Hungary in October, and will be invited to a range of other high profile events including an overseas study trip.
