Prof Parkin (right) receives the Beilby Medal from IOM^3 President Jeff SmithProf Ivan Parkin received the Beilby Award on 15 June 2004. Prof Parkin is distinguished for his original contributions to the synthesis of materials, in particular work on solid-state metathesis and atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition.

The Beilby Medal and Prize, administered jointly by SCI, the UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), is now widely respected and coveted as a high accolade for younger researchers.

Prof Parkin works at the Department of Chemistry at University College London. He is respected as one of the leading materials chemists of his generation and has been involved in over 200 publications in journals of learned societies.

Sir George Beilby (1850–1924) is renowned as one of the leading applied scientists of his age. His long and remarkable career as a scientist and industrialist was marked by an enduring interest in the twin concerns of fuel economy and smoke abatement. His dedication and energetic research had great significance for the fuel and metal industries, and produced far-reaching advantages for society.

Aside from a period of office as SCI World President, Sir George helped develop SCI in Scotland. A Beilby Memorial Fund to reward exceptional research was raised in his honour by subscription.
