This month we answer questions sent in by readers

Web questions and answersCan one highlight an area of a web page in Internet Explorer so as to print only that area and not the whole page?
Using the mouse, hold down the left click button and drag and select the area of text you want.

On your Internet Explorer browser, go to File, Print and then you should see the General tab as the default option in an options dialog box.

Under the Page Range on the left, you should have four options: All, Selection, Current Page, and Pages. Click on Selection. Then click Apply and Print (on the bottom right hand corner of the window).

If I have saved a web page to file, do I have the page actually on file, or just its address? Do I have to be online to read the web page at a later date?
If you save to file using Save As, it will save the document to file on your computer. Sometimes there will be an associated folder that goes with this file. This folder will hold the images that are used to make up the web page. You can try with any web page.

For example using SCI’s homepage, www.soci.org, go to File, then Save As. Then find a place to store the files, eg My Desktop, and Save. You will see that wherever your web page is saved, there will be a folder with the same name. This contains the images and style formats that are used to make up the page.

There are several alternatives to this method. From the File option you can go to File, then Send, and choose Page by email or Link by email. Another option, though you will need to be online, is to add it to your Favorites list. Just click on Favorites in your browser and then click on Add to Favorites (see SCI Members' News June 2004 issue).

Webwatch: CIA factbook
CIA factbook If you are going travelling, following the news, or simply realising the inadequacies of your atlas or gazetteer, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) factbook is for you.

Located at www.cia.gov/cia/ publications/factbook/index.html the site offers a thorough and up-to-date fact file on just about every country in the world, as well as regions such as Antarctica, which span several national borders.

The information includes data on local geography, climate and resources, people, including birth, death and migration rates, health statistics, and facts on government and judicial systems and the economy. Transport and communications are also featured.

The gallery of maps, each of a different continent or region, is also useful, especially as it is offered in jpg and pdf versions. The type is too small in most cases to read many of the place names in the jpgs, but the pdfs can be magnified so all the detail becomes clear.
