Comment: a new start for business people everywhere

Business Strategy Group launched

The new SCI Business Strategy Group was publicly launched with a gala champagne evening in London on 30 November 2004. Sir Tom McKillop, Chief Executive of AstraZeneca and current SCI World President, delivered the keynote address on the topic: ‘Can innovation reverse declining European competitiveness?’

The Business Strategy Group programme for 2005 includes a wide range of international meetings. Evening seminars and single and multi-day conferences are planned, and will focus on issues of interest to people working in business functions in the science-based industries. Topics include: ‘How I made marketing strategy work for my company’; ‘How I stimulated innovation in my large and bureaucratic organisation’; ‘How I registered for a patent’; ‘How I successfully implemented a merger between two large and contrasting organisations (and how my competitor failed miserably!)’; ‘How I got funding for my great business idea and today am a millionaire’; and ‘How I created a successful university spin-out’, among others.

The Business Strategy Group has already stimulated an immense amount of interest from within the SCI Membership and beyond. We hope that it will create a niche for those of you whose jobs and interests are no longer about hands-on science, but instead focus on strategy and management. The Group is new and there are still many opportunities for you to get involved — it is guaranteed to be the best way to network and raise your profile in your industry.
