Young Chemists’ Panel

Personal Chemistry: Alexander Smith

Senior Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry, GlaxoSmithKline
Alexander Smith

Where do you work?
GlaxoSmithKline R&D, Harlow.

What is your job there?
I am a Senior Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry within Psychiatry CEDD.

Why did you join SCI?
I wanted to extend my personal network outside GSK. Attendance at SCI conferences and events of interest to me has allowed me to do this. SCI Membership also gave me access to the Young Chemists’ Panel, and as an active Member I gain valuable experience and have many opportunities to learn new skills and enhance my career profile.

What is the best website you have visited lately?
I regularly visit www.maos.net. This website relates to microwave-assisted chemistry and has been created and is administered by Oliver Kappe. I think it is an excellent reference point for chemists unfamiliar with the technology, though there are also many useful links and updated references to keep the regular microwave users happy.

What is your favourite holiday destination?
I love scenic destinations with fresh, clean air away from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities. Most of my vacations are spent in France and I also frequent the Greek Isles.

What's the best advice you have ever received?
If you want to get something done, give it to a busy person.

Which book would you recommend as a ‘must read’?
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage to the Antarctic by Alfred Lansing was recommended to me by a friend. I now recommend it to you. A true account of human endeavour; such were the odds against survival. It puts all of our day-to-day worries and problems into context.
