John Wilkins
Insense Ltd
Where
do you work?
At Insense Ltd, a biotechnology spin-out company. We are based
at Colworth House, a science park near Bedford, UK.
What is your job there?
As a member of a small team developing a new type of wound
dressing, I get involved in a wide range of activities, from
scientific discussions to overseeing clinical trials.
Why did you join SCI?
I joined for several reasons. SCI organises superb events
and it is a great place to network. Being Secretary of the
Cambridge & Great Eastern Section has been extremely rewarding.
I have been involved in and attended so many stimulating events,
and get a great buzz from helping bring science to schools,
students and to the wider public. You get to meet so many
great people.
What would you like to have invented?
The perfect wound dressing (actually, we think we are
almost there!).
Who is your hero?
Sir David Attenborough. He has wonderful enthusiasm, and has
communicated this to so many people through his work.
What is your measure of success?
Achieving ones aims without trampling on others, or
damaging our planet.
What is your motto in life?
Carpe diem
What is your favourite holiday destination?
North Norfolk for its wide landscapes, unspoilt coastline
and wonderful nature reserves (not to mention its excellent
pubs and fish restaurants). My idea of paradise is a country
walk in Sheringham Park, with a picnic at the Temple, on a
bright and clear spring day.
With whom would you most like to spend an evening in serious
discussion?
Viv Stanshall, the comic genius behind the Bonzo Dog Band.
What is your funniest joke?
Q: How many Surrealists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: A fish.
What is the best website you have visited lately?
Thenakedscientists.com (its not what it sounds like)
and the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day site, which has
some superb images : antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html
(I particularly enjoyed their 1 April entry, which gave incontrovertible
evidence of water on Mars).
