Strategy planning process in full swing

Executive Committee pledges full support as ten-year plan takes shape

Andrew LaddsWe reported in last month’s SCI Members' News that we had begun the detailed planning project to take us forward for the next ten years (click here for report). The Executive Committee was briefed on the initial stages at its meeting held on 15 September 2005, and gave its total support for the process and content to date.

So far, we have concentrated on strategy and reconciling the dynamics of Member needs and directional success. We have defined a clear purpose for SCI, a realistic vision, and high level objectives, qualified by values. All of these elements are now being honed and, together with a project-based business plan, will be communicated to key committees and opinion formers throughout SCI to ensure that a consultative process is followed.

The business plan
This will form the engine room of our delivery; it will be directed by our high level objectives and its components will have cohesion and a direct link with our purpose. Most importantly of all, our business plan will be robust, and will reflect a new business model to facilitate enhanced membership value, membership and customer growth and a truly international presence.

SCI overseas
Recent meetings with our America and Canada Groups show that SCI has substantial membership potential across this continent and a valuable network of senior business executives and scientists. We shall build into our new plan much closer collaboration with these sections and strengthen the network between them, ourselves and our target development areas of the EU, India and Southeast Asia. I am particularly grateful to the many Members who have offered their help and support towards the preparations and execution of overseas development. It proves again the intrinsic strength and quality of SCI’s networks.

Collaborations
We have identified some potential collaborations for SCI on an international basis. These may assist our value-added objectives and enhance membership growth – but more of this in due course.

SCI Business Strategy Group
Our thanks must be extended to the officers and members of the Business Strategy Group, who have really got behind our planning activities. From the ‘Visions’ presentation I gave at the meeting of Council on 6 July to date, they have given their own vision and perspectives, have brainstormed ideas and development projects for the business plan, and have really ‘thought outside the box’. By grouping their 78 ideas and development projects, we have been able to construct a number of development themes ranging from personal development and career conduits, through to science technology venture capital groups. Thankyou too to those Members who have offered their help for our planning project; we will be engaging with you during the process. Please let me have your ideas at andrew@soci.org.
