GPCRs in Medicinal Chemistry

List of Books published by organisations other than SCI*

The books or journals listed here, the ‘10,000’ list, are reference or textbooks or may be other items of possible interest. They may have been acquired for the use of Members and SCI staff or may be ex -display copies from conferences. Most of them will be held in the Members’ Study, but a selection may be displayed in the Members’ Room on the ground floor. A very few are of ‘archaeological’ interest, for instance having connections with distinguished scientists of past times.

*Books published by SCI can be found here

10,000 Centenaire de Marcelin Berthelot, 1827-1927. (In French)

A celebration of the life of M. Berthelot including a short biography, photographs and a record of speeches made for the occasion by many eminent persons.

The book was published in Paris in 1929, probably by the Comite Marcelin Berthelot, the print date being 18th. December 1930. It is a large soft-back, 274mm by 365mm by 55mm thick. The cardboard cover is gilt, has an embossed portrait of its subject on the front and the whole is in dilapidated condition, though entire.

This is an historic record of an outstanding scientist and is recommended for conservation/restoration treatment, followed by protected display.

10,001 Gilbert on The Magnet. One of a limited edition of a translation from the original Latin (250 copies) bequeathed to the SCI by Rudolph Messel. It is, as far as possible, a facsimile in English of the rare original folio Latin edition of 1600. A short index has been added to the original text.

The book is bound ‘stiff-back’ in a white cover. The cover is apparently in good condition, though dirty but the title page is loose (and probably some others as well). Approximate Size, 300 x 204mm x 40mm thick.

This is an historic record of an outstanding scientist and is recommended for conservation/restoration treatment, followed by protected display.

10,002 Notes on the De Magnete of Dr William Gilbert. A companion volume to 10,001 above, also part of the Messel Bequest. Hard-back, bound in buckram (?) otherwise matching ‘Gilbert on the Magnet’ in style. The binding appears sound but the cover is worn and stained. Size 300 x 204mm x 14mm thick. Should be restored, or at least given conservation treatment along with 10,001.

10,003 Conversations on Chemistry by Jane Marcet. Sixth edition, 1819, of a book first published in 1806. In two volumes; 1’ On Simple Bodies’ and 2’ On Compound Bodies’ in matching tooled leather bindings. Pocket book Size , 180 x 110mm x 230 and 210mm thick, respectively. In generally sound condition but leather of binding worn, especially on spine. Spine titles damaged and partly missing. These books were found on a second-hand book stall by Dr J. J. Wren and presented by him to SCI, of which he was General Secretary at the time.

Copies of the First Edition may have been bound by Michael Faraday, whilst he was apprenticed to a bookbinder. He certainly saw them and they helped to determine him on a life devoted to Science.

10,004 The Jubilee of the Chemical Society of London, 1891. A record of the proceedings of the Jubilee celebration, together with an account of the History and Development of the Society, 1841-1891. Published in London, 1896. Hard-back, paper(?) covered boards with oiled or sized fabric spine. Some wear on board but generally good condition. Size 219 x 145mm x 19mm thick.

10,005 The ‘Practising Chemists’ A History of the Society for Analytical Chemistry, 1874-1974, by R.C. Chirnside and J.H. Hamence. Presented to the SCI on the occasion of the centenary of the Society for Analytical Chemistry, 16th. July 1974. Full leather binding, 243 x 162mm x 25 mm thick. Very good condition.
