India steering group to
extend SCI global reach
New SCI group planned for India
The first meeting of SCI’s India
steering group was held in June in
London. Created in response to
SCI’s strategy and business plan
objective to extend the Society’s
global reach, the group is chaired
by Keshavan Niranjan and will
work towards creating a networkbased
SCI office in the country.
The project, which aims to
develop new SCI groups in India
and China, is led by SCI chief
executive Andrew Ladds, and
addresses the fastest growing
global markets to facilitate
knowledge transfer from
developed countries and, in future,
from these new economies back
into the developed world.
The steering group’s first
challenge is to develop a plan for
the formation of SCI India, with its
own local office, by June 2007.
The office will tap into the
Society’s mechanisms, skills and
networks to provide benefits
initially at a senior level but in
future to a broad-based
membership in the country. Other
SCI groups will be shaped on the
model of this first group.
The plan will take account of the
location of the new office, which
must be close to the industries it
will serve and have good transport
links, and be seen to be operating
independently.
A provisional ‘roadmap’ will be
drawn up by the end of August
2006 to assist in budget planning,
with a full strategic business plan
developed by the end of October. It
is expected this will be approved
by the Trustee Board in December
allowing the plan to be
implemented in January 2007 with
the office opening later in the year
in June.
- Members of the steering group
are Keshavan Niranjan (chairman),
Tajalli Keshavarz, Linda Spedding,
Ray Boucher (Wiley), Sandy Gray,
Swaminathan Sivaram, Prabhu
Kulkarni.
SCI’s Andrew Ladds (chief executive
and general secretary) and
Neil Eisberg (editor, C&I) will offer
central support, as well as SEEDA,
DTI and the Indian High
Commission; Raj Gupta (SCI North
America) and Chris Hill (India);
Cranfield Business School; and
Anant Shekkar Singh.
