boyThemes in Innovation
Sixty or seventy people from across the SCI membership spectrum, representing a range of disciplines, backgrounds and companies, brought together at Henley Management Centre by a common interest in innovation: what hopes, frustrations, expectations, concerns, possibilities and anxieties did they bring with them? How were these emotions shared? What did each person take away as ideas and how will they do something with those ideas? We have been reflecting on what we heard, saw and felt.

Three big themes came out for us from the discussions in which we participated:

  • 'an innovative environment is a happy and productive one'
  • 'an innovative culture needs clarity of vision and strong leadership'
  • 'an innovative environment is no use without the chance to change things'.

So what exactly is the organisational environment and is it the same as the organisational culture? They are closely related, but the environment is made up of real things like organisational structures, processes and real people with real management styles. The culture is the product of all these things and is often described in terms like "the way we do things around here". By changing the environment you can influence and - over time - change the culture.
