Themes
in Innovation
Sixty or seventy people from across the SCI membership
spectrum, representing a range of disciplines, backgrounds
and companies, brought together at Henley Management Centre
by a common interest in innovation: what hopes, frustrations,
expectations, concerns, possibilities and anxieties did
they bring with them? How were these emotions shared?
What did each person take away as ideas and how will they
do something with those ideas? We have been reflecting
on what we heard, saw and felt.
Three big themes came out for us from the discussions
in which we participated:
- 'an innovative environment is a happy and productive
one'
- 'an innovative culture needs clarity of vision
and strong leadership'
- 'an innovative environment is no use without the
chance to change things'.

is it the same as the organisational culture? They are
closely related, but the environment is made up of real
things like organisational structures, processes and
real people with real management styles. The culture
is the product of all these things and is often described
in terms like "the way we do things around here".
By changing the environment you can influence and -
over time - change the culture.
