Are we coping with contamination?

Achievements and Aspirations 12–15 September 2004, Loughborough University

contaminated land‘Contaminated Land — Achievements and Aspirations’ is a major international conference organised by the SCI Environment Group, RSC Water Science Forum and First Faraday and supported by the Environment Agency.

The legacy of contaminated land is still an issue of major economic significance to much of the industrialised world. The UK and Europe recognised the potential threat posed by this over 30 years ago, but despite governmental and industry action, there is still much to be done. In 1979, SCI ran the first UK conference devoted to the subject of contaminated land.

This new event in September is the 25th anniversary of the SCI conference and will be drawing together the experiences of the last 25 years to assess how much progress has been made in addressing the issues relating to contamination, with contributions from all interested parties. The main objective of the event is to assess if we have progressed since 1979 or are we really no further forward?

The ‘Contaminated Land’ conference will draw together all the major experts in the UK and from abroad, to cover the diverse subjects which make up the landscape of contaminated land management today. This will be achieved by a combination of keynote speakers, invited and contributed papers considering such diverse issues as policy, risk assessment, site investigation and assessment, stakeholder issues, local authority roles and contributions, professional development, treatment technologies and societal aspects.

There will also be a specialist session on the new MCERTS analytical standard on the Sunday afternoon. The final part of this session will be an open discussion of all issues associated with this new standard.

The conference will involve consultants, engineers, water, health and environment specialists, regulators, chemists, microbiologists, industrialists, local authority personnel, planners and other related disciplines. This residential conference will provide a unique opportunity over three days for those people involved in this significant environmental issue to come together and plan the next 25 years of managing the problems of contaminated land.
