Conference set to go off
with a bang
Fine Chemicals Group meeting,
58 September
A Celebration of Organic Chemistry
Warwick
The SCI Fine Chemicals Group has joined forces with pharmaceutical
giant AstraZeneca to organise a major new multi-day conference
this autumn.
A Celebration of Organic Chemistry will begin on the evening
of Sunday 5 September and will end after lunch on Wednesday
8 September. The meeting is to be held at the University of
Warwick Conference Park, UK, and is anticipated to be the
first in a series of chemistry meetings jointly organised
by SCI and the pharmaceutical industry.
The programme will comprise talks by past winners of the
annual AstraZeneca Awards in Organic Chemistry. Since their
inception in 1990, two such awards have been made each year
to honour outstanding achievements by young organic chemists.
Previous winners have gone on to become leaders in the organic
chemistry community, a fact reflected in the quality of the
programme. The 2004 awards will be presented during a special
session of the meeting which will feature lectures by the
2004 recipients.
The organising committee are delighted to announce that Prof
Steven Ley, of the University of Cambridge, who originally
suggested the conference, has agreed to open the meeting with
a plenary lecture entitled Development of new methods
for organic synthesis. In addition, Prof Erik Sorensen,
of Princeton University, US, a previous winner of AstraZenecas
US-equivalent Excellence in Chemistry Award, will present
a guest lecture entitled Architectural self-construction
in nature and chemical synthesis.
A poster session and wine mixer will be held following the
plenary lecture on the first evening. Posters are welcomed
from all aspects of organic chemistry.
Warwick is a delightful town steeped in history. It is perhaps
best known for its magnificent castle, regarded as the finest
mediaeval castle in England, and boasts a good selection of
pubs and fine restaurants.
The University Conference Park is an award-winning venue,
and enjoys excellent road, rail and air links. Accommodation
for delegates is available on campus in modern single study
bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.
The meeting should appeal to chemists in both academia and
industry. Sponsored by AstraZeneca, the meeting is excellent
value, particularly for PhD students and academics/postdoctoral
workers presenting a poster, for whom accommodation charges
will be waived.
