Celebrating 25 years of process development
Event preview: 25th Process Development Symposium
This year sees the 25th anniversary
of the Process Development
Symposium. The event will be held
at Churchill College Cambridge
from 5 – 7 December 2007.
The area of Process
Development continues to be a
challenging and important area
for the research into, and
application of, modern
synthetic organic chemistry
as well as enabling
technologies. The symposium
aims to bring together
a wide range of speakers
from across the pharmaceutical,
agrochemical and fine chemical
sectors as well as from an
academic background.
The plenary speakers at the
conference will be Professor Steven
Ley, from the University of
Cambridge, and Dr Edward
Grabowski, formerly of Merck
USA. They will give their personal
perspectives on how the
area has changed over the last
quarter of a century and how the
challenges of the future will be
met.
At the conference, Professor
Nicholas Turner from the
University of Manchester will receive
the GlaxoSmithKline,
AstraZeneca, Pfizer Prize for
Process Chemistry Research
for 2007 and give a lecture
highlighting his contributions to
recent advances in the area of
biocatalysis.
The strong supporting line up
of speakers will highlight case
studies from across the industry
or describe advances in technology.
A session within the programme
has been devoted to a
retrospective of process development,
commemorating the work
performed on cimetidine, atenolol
and amlodipine, early blockbusters
that changed the pharmaceutical
industry.
To encourage future generations
of process chemists, 15 PhD
students will receive bursaries to
attend the meeting and, as ever,
the symposium will provide a
valuable informal networking opportunity
for delegates and speakers
alike.
