Separation Science and Technology conference June 2007
Adsorption chromatography is an established downstream technique in biopolymer purification.
Base matrices are functionalised with ligands to affect selectivity of the sorbent. Downstream
processes have relied on a series of orthogonal steps to affect a high degree of purification.
With recent developments in ligand design and development the more established techniques
in chromatography have been supplemented with new families of ligands referred to as 'Mixed
Mode'.
The purpose of this meeting was to provide an update into these new ligands and demonstrate
the utility of this technique in a process environment. We reviewed new areas of application for
mixed mode chromatography in the bioseparations industries and the complementarity of this
approach to established chromatographic processes. The international group of speakers includeed
experts in mixed mode chromatography from academia and the bioseparations industries as well
as chromatography sorbent suppliers. The conference was designed to benefit both expert and novice
Chromatographers alike who are keen to consider all options available in downstream processing.
