Get to grips with the basics
of chemistry
Young Chemists Panel:
Chemistry for Non-Chemists, Aston Business School,
Birmingham, UK, 34 February 2005
This
is the second course organised by the SCI Young Chemists
Panel on Chemistry for Non-Chemists. Its aims are to provide
participants with an understanding of the basic principles
of organic and physical organic chemistry and their relation
to drug molecules.
The course will be run over two days on Thursday 3 and Friday
4 February 2005 by Dr Joseph Harrity, of Sheffield University,
and Dr Chris Frost, University of Bath.
Six lectures and five tutorials will be given, which will
focus on atoms, electrons and bonds; electron movement, aromaticity
and functional groups; shape and isomerism; stereochemistry;
acidity and pKa; and lipophilicity. Following each lecture,
tutorials will work through related examples and expert tutorial
leaders will be on hand to help. The content of each lecture
is designed to be basic and will provide individuals with
thorough background knowledge in areas of chemistry they work
with on a daily basis but do not have a full understanding
of. Detailed notes of every lecture have been prepared alongside
some additional notes that will be provided on the day.
As the course has as its focus the relationship of basic
organic chemistry to pharmaceutical products, it is primarily
targeted at those scientists working in the pharmaceutical
industry, although participants from other parts of the chemistry
industry are expected to attend. Furthermore, it is anticipated
that the course participants will have had exposure to varying
aspects of chemistry within their jobs, and will work alongside
organic chemists in project teams, eg bioscientists, pharmacists
and process engineers. By the end of the course participants
will be better placed to interact with their colleagues in
a multi-disciplined environment and particularly in meetings
and within their project teams.
