Young Chemists shine in
industry showcase
Young Chemists' Panel:
14th Young Chemist in Industry symposium
The
14th SCI Young Chemists Panels Young Chemist
in Industry symposium took place on 26 April 2005. This
annual one day meeting showcases the chemistry being undertaken
within industry. The symposium represents a unique opportunity
for younger chemists usually under the age of 30 and
without a PhD to present their science to an audience
outside their own organisation. It also incorporates a competitive
element, with a prize for the best presentation (and two runners
up), as judged by the organising committee.
This years winner was Matt Welham of AstraZeneca who
gave an excellent presentation on an alternative process route
to Gefitinib (Iressa). The runners up were Dave Beal of Pfizer,
who talked about a new preparation of 1,2,4-triazoles, and
Alastair Hill from Merck Sharp & Dohme, who spoke about
his involvement in the development of structural alerts
a cheminformatic tool.
In addition to the participants lectures the audience
was treated to aguest lecture from a more seasoned member
of the chemical industry. This took the form of an overview
of the career of Dr Frank King, Vice President of Chemistry
for the Neurology and GI CEDD at GlaxoSmithKline in Harlow,
UK. The organising committee would like to thank Sigma-Aldrich
for its kind sponsorship of the prizes, and GlaxoSmithKline
for its sponsorship of the wine mixer that followed the event.
