Kinase leads Fairly to Young Chemist in Industry award

Young Chemists' Panel meeting, SCI Young Chemist in Industry, London, 29 March 2006

Young Chemist in IndustryThe 15th SCI Young Chemists’ Panel’s ‘Young Chemist in Industry’ symposium took place on 29 March. The meeting aimed to give younger chemists (usually under the age of 30 and without a PhD) the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience.

The meeting also showcased contemporary chemistry from within the industrial setting and gave young chemists the valuable opportunity to meet their peers from other organisations.
The meeting incorporated a competitive element, with a prize for the best presentation and two runners-up. This year’s winner was Gary Fairley from AstraZeneca who gave a detailed, personal account of chemistry towards kinase leads.

The runners-up were Neal Sach from Pfizer and Victoria Laing from UCB. This year’s guest lecturer was Hazel Hunt, director of chemistry at Argenta Discovery in Harlow, who gave a detailed and interesting account of her company’s MCH-1R programme. The presentations can be accessed online at the SCI website.

The organising committee wishes to thank Sigma-Aldrich for its sponsorship of the prizes and GlaxoSmithKline for sponsoring the wine mixer that followed the event.
