Awards: Young Chemist in Industry
The Young Chemist in Industry, organised by the Young Chemists' Panel as an annual, one day meeting, was held at SCI headquarters, London, on Wednesday 25 April 2007.
The meeting aimed to showcase the organic chemistry being undertaken in an industrial setting by younger chemists, and represents a unique opportunity for such chemists to present their science to an audience outside their own organisation. It also incorporates a competitive element with prizes for the best presentations.
Over 80 delegates attended the conference and this year the organising panel had taken the decision to broaden the subject area to cover all aspects of chemistry rather than just organic chemistry as in previous years. The lectures presented were very diverse from traditional medicinal chemistry, agrochemicals, physicochemical profiling, compound stability right through to the electronic lab notebook. All the talks were of a very high standard with winners:
- 1st: Christine Prosser (UCB-Slough) – High throughput physicochemical profiling in early stage drug discovery.
- 2nd: Theresa Humphries (Astra- Zeneca) – Synthetic strategies targeted towards novel C5a receptor antagonists.
- 3rd: Richard Bell (Organon) – The eLNB at Organon.
The winners received e-vouchers from Amazon of £150, £100, and £50 respectively. In addition to the participants’ lectures, a lecture from an experienced, high profile industrial figure was included to round off the event. Laramie Gaster from GlaxoSmithKine presented a talk entitled ‘Three decades of chemistry – the good, the bad and the ugly’, which was an inspirational and thought-provoking message to everyone present.
