On 29 April 2008, ten young chemists from across the country will gather at SCI's London HQ for an annual one-day symposium to showcase the work they have been doing in the chemical industry. This meeting provides a unique opportunity for young chemists who do not possess a PhD to present their science to an audience outside their own organisation. This year’s participants will talk on a wide range of chemistry topics, and come from Organon, Evotec, GSK, Pfizer, Cellzome, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Novartis and AstraZeneca.

A competitive element is incorporated into the day, with prizes sponsored by Sigma Aldrich for the best presentations. The symposium is rounded off with a lecture from an experienced, high-profile industry figure. This year it will be Graham Showell from Takeda, with a talk entitled: Event preview: Young Chemist in Industry symposium ‘From pharma to biotech and back – a roller coaster ride in drug discovery’.

The lectures will cover a wide range of topics, including medicinal chemistry, process chemistry and new methodologies. The conference will be of interest to all members, but especially industrial chemists, who will be able to discover what their contemporaries are doing in other industry sectors; providing fresh insights into areas they had not previously considered investigating. It will also be relevant to students considering an industrial career, offering career information and networking opportunities over a glass of wine at the end of the proceedings.

The Young Chemist in Industry symposium, now in its 17th year, routinely attracts more than 80 delegates, so book early to guarantee your place.
