Media latches onto alcohol
patch and heart microwaves
Could
microwaving someones heart be the key to controlling
heart attacks and strokes? This is the belief of researchers
at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia, who are
developing the practice. Chemistry & Industry magazine
brought the research to the attention of the press and, as
a result, numerous news outlets across the globe, including
listeners of CBS news in the US, heard about the research.
C&I also explained new research into the development
of an alcohol patch. Researchers in North Carolina, US, say
the patches will contain nicotine to help smokers get off
cigarettes, and a compound called mecamylamine, which reduces
a persons desire to both drink and smoke. The news spread
quickly, with articles reporting the research in the Taipei
Times in Taiwan and the Sydney Morning Herald through
to webindia123.com to name a few.
SCIs journals continue to publish high quality research
that the SCI Press Office reports to the media. Two research
pieces in the JCTB (Journal of Chemical Technology and
Biotechnology) had a distinctly environmental flavour.
The first explained how adding small amounts of seaweed to
contaminated soil could prove to be a natural and effective
way of breaking down the toxic pesticide DDT.
The second demonstrated that nodules collected from the Indian
Ocean seabed can be treated with bacteria to extract scarce
land-based minerals (such as cobalt, copper and nickel) in
an environmentally sound way. From the New York Times
to the Times of India, the journals research
is reaching far and wide.
The SCI Press Office regularly highlights important peer-reviewed
research from the journals to the media, so keep your eyes
peeled for SCI-published work.
