Polymer International broadens its scope
Conference review: SCI participation at the 41st International Symposium on Macromolecules
The 41st International Symposium
on Macromolecules was held in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil, from 16 to 21 July 2006.
It brought together the best in current
thinking in polymer science
to examine the theme of ‘promoting
life quality’ through the use of
polymers. The importance of polymers
for preserving the environment
and improving living standards
in the 21st century was
discussed in topics ranging from
the recycling of household plastics,
harnessing solar energy using photovoltaic
polymers and the use of
polymers in biomedical applications.
SCI journal Polymer International made use of this excellent showcase
to highlight its revised aims
and scope, including nanotechnology,
photo and optoactive polymers
and polymers for tissue engineering.
Sarah Cooney, then director
of publications, and Patrick Walter, Polymer International’s senior editorial
assistant, represented SCI,
along with three employees from
Wiley, publisher of SCI’s four journals,
who attended to promote the
journal and attract new papers (see picture below).
Following the success of an
earlier meeting, Polymer
International organised a ‘meet the
editor’ session on the 17 July. The
lunchtime gathering, for invited
guests, brought together top polymer
scientists from all fields and
provided them with an opportunity
to talk with the editors of the
journal, learn how the journal
plans to develop itself and discover
how its new commissioning
programme will tackle emerging
topics in polymer research. Over
100 people attended the event,
exceeding all expectations.
Polymer International also convened
its first ever full editorial
board meeting on the 16 July,
bringing together both executive
editorial and advisory editorial
boards. This meeting was an open
forum for discussing the future
direction of the journal and a list
of new and emerging areas was
compiled to be considered by the journal in future.
It was also suggested that additional
collaborations between industry
and academia could provide
valuable contributions
for the
journal,
increasing
its
interest to
industrial
polymer
groups.
