Journals offer backfiles online

SCI's publishing partner Wiley puts journals' entire backfiles online

JSFA   PMSci

...and in the 1990s
Three of SCI’s prestigious academic journals, Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Pest Management Science and Polymer International now offer their entire backfiles online.

JSFA is now available from volume 1, issue 1 in 1950, and PMSci (formerly Pesticide Science) goes back to 1970. Previously, content was only available for older issues in print form.

The move forms part of SCI’s publishing partner, John Wiley and Sons', decision to publish its entire Wiley Food Science backfile online, which includes JSFA and PMSci.

As part of SCI’s new contract with Wiley, which began on 1 January 2006, the full cost of digitising the complete backfiles of the SCI journals was underwritten by our publishing partner. SCI will benefit from a percentage of sales of the Food Science backfile.

As SCI's then Director of Publications Sarah Cooney notes: ‘Many societies and publishers are in the process of digitising their full content, as there is an enormous amount of excellent, high-quality contained in many journals' 'pre-pdf' archives, and many stakeholders are prepared to pay for this older knowledge. Digitisation also provides a significant benefit to SCI's journals by dramatically increasing the amount of searchable content available online.’

Polymer InternationalPolymer International's backfiles from 1969-1995 became available in April 2007. A few missing volumes and issues in the collection will be updated shortly.

The backfiles are available here for JSFA, PMSci, and PI.

Wiley plans to offer digital backfiles of every issue of every journal it publishes, including SCI's Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, with completion scheduled for 2007. Backfile collections in 20 distinct subject modules are planned, spanning two centuries of scientific research.

Article pdfs are full-text indexed and searchable both via Wiley InterScience and CrossRef Search. Abstracts, citations, and references are offered in interactive HTML (hypertext mark-up language, used on the web) to link with the full roster of Wiley InterScience publications. Additional links connect to resources from hundreds of other publishers, including material published after the citing article. Click here for more information (pdf 380Kb).

Backfile Collections are sold through Wiley InterScience as single, indivisible packages for a one-off fee. For more information, please contact Wiley at:
