Prof Luckham leaves Melbourne after a year's sabbatical

Melbourne, AustraliaAt almost the same moment on 7 July that SCI HQ was opening its doors in Belgrave Square for the AGM, Members of the SCI Australia International Group and their partners were sitting down to a farewell dinner with Prof Paul Luckham, to mark the end of his year’s sabbatical in Melbourne.

The dinner was held in well-known Melbourne restaurant, Sails on the Bay in the suburb of Elwood, looking out onto the waters of Port Philip Bay. It was a cold and blustery evening (Australia isn’t always hot and sunny), and we were pleased to be watching the waves from the inside rather than sitting on the beach.

We drank a celebratory toast to SCI’s international linkages, and bade Paul and his wife bon voyage for the long journey back to London.

During his stay down under, Paul has become a good friend to the Australia International Group, having attended many of our committee meetings. He has also taken part in a number of functions, including being guest speaker at the presentation dinner and participating in the annual plant visit for 2003. The committee will miss his wise counsel and good humour.

On behalf of the Australia Section, Secretary and Treasurer John Fowler presented Paul with a subscription to the Australian Geographic magazine — each edition features aspects of Australian wildlife, fauna and flora, and spectacular scenery. Paul also received a farewell gift to remind him of his time in the antipodes.

By Richard Thwaites, Australia International Group Chairman.
