On
25 February, the SCI Canada Section held their annual awards
dinner in Toronto. The dinner was a huge success and celebrated
the work of three very well deserved recipients. The awards
acknowledge Canadian business and academic leaders for service
and superior contribution in their fields.
Andrew Benedek was given the International Award for his
contribution to the chemical industry in Canada, with particular
reference to his work in water treatment technologies.
Professor Musa Kamal was awarded with the Purvis Award for
his pioneering work in the fields of polymer engineering and
processing while Dr Harold Jennings was congratulated for
his work to develop a novel vaccine against Group C meningococcal
infection with the Kalev Pugi Award.
A new award for the Canada Section was also inaugurated on
the night. The Julia Levy Award will provide recognition of
successful innovation in Canada, in the field of Bio-medical
Science and Engineering, with a particular focus on the relationship
between university and business. Dr. Julia Levy, creator and
developer of a therapy to treat age-related blindness, delivered
a keynote address at the evening ceremony.
