The well-attended ceremony was held
at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and attracted
eminent scientists, senior executives from across the
chemical sector and active SCI India members.
Also present were Shri Kumaresh Misra (IAS), joint
secretary – Government of India,
as chief guest and
SCI’s honorary president John Beacham CBE as
guest of honour.
Andrew Ladds, Chief Executive of SCI commented:
‘the role of SCI India is to actively share
knowledge, scientific and manufacturing best practice
and to provide an independent
platform for members to
come together to learn, debate
views, acquire career path development
and, more importantly,
to access business networks to
greatly assist their companies
and profitability’. Ladds added:
‘SCI’s strap line is “Where
Science Meets Business” we are now poised to achieve
this in India’.
SCI India will further develop its parent charity’s
models of knowledge transfer and will publish its
flagship magazine Chemistry and Industry in India, for
the Indian market. During 2008, a programme of
conferences, seminars and workshops, focusing on
key topics and addressing global imperatives, will be
rolled out.
In addition to professional, small and medium
enterprises, corporate and lifetime membership, SCI
India will also offer student membership, which will
enable students in India to access international
science innovations and links to global research
activities and laboratories, the first of its kind
in India.
During the inaugural SCI India ceremony Rajendra
Kumar Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was recently
presented with the Nobel Peace Prize, was awarded
the 2007 SCI Environment Award for his significant
contribution to the improvement of environmental
understanding, protection and performance in chemistry-related fields.
