2004s SCI Liverpool Regional Group prize-giving evening was
held at the magnificent Liverpool Athenaeum, UK on 19 November.
The Committee was delighted to have such a distinguished
speaker as Dr Brian Iddon, MP for Bolton South East. As well
as presenting the awards, Dr Iddon gave a captivating overview
of the scientific issues concerning the House of Commons and
the various committees charged with debating such topics and
making recommendations to the government. He punctuated this
tour de force with various anecdotes and recollections from
a fascinating career that included his time as Reader in Organic
Chemistry at Salford University, UK.
The Leverhulme Prize, for the best student completing an
Honours degree in chemistry at the University of Liverpool,
went to Helen Hughes. Helen has stayed on at Liverpool to
study for her PhD with Prof Matt Rosseinsky on multifunctional
oxide materials.
The Regional Group Prize for best full-time student at Liverpool
John Moores University was awarded to Claire Fye. Claire had
spent the summer working at Unilever Research & Development,
Port Sunlight, Merseyside, UK, and has now returned to John
Moores to carry out a PhD with Dr Phil Riby.

The Regional Group Prize for best part-time student at John Moores
was won by Charlotte Blythe, who started as a HNC student
and moved onto the BSc course. Throughout her six years of
study, Charlotte has been working in industry and is currently
working for ThermoElectron, Runcorn, UK, as an Applications
Chemist developing chromatography methods.
We were particularly delighted to present our first ever
Regional Group Prize for the best student on Open University course
S205 (the Molecular World) who lives in the area covered by
the Liverpool Regional Group (this currently stretches from North
Wales to Cumbria). The first recipient was Nick Lowe from
Rossendale in Lancashire, who has since completed organic
and inorganic modules part-time while working.
The Group Prize for the best student at Bangor University
went to Erica Lewis. Unfortunately, Erica was unable to attend
the evening, as she was overseas.
It was particularly special to be able to present two of
the current Liverpool Group Committee Members with Distinguished
Service Awards. Dr Alan Tulley and Dr Harold Fielding have
worked tirelessly for the Group for a number of
years. The Distinguished Service Award is presented for outstanding
service to SCI of at least 10 years aggregate. Harold and
Alan comfortably satisfy this qualification.
Alan is currently Vice-Chair, having
previously been its Chair. Also very active for the RSC, he
has been presenting his absorbing lecture on photography for
many years throughout the Regional Groups. Alan is on the board of
trustees for the Catalyst Discovery Centre, Widnes, UK.
Harold joined SCI in its centenary year through the Schools
Industry Project run by Alan Heaton. Harold has been Treasurer
of the Regional Group for much of this time, and sits on the SCI
Benevolent Fund Committee. He manages all this when he is
not in the US visiting his children.
The Committee would like to congratulate all the winners
and thank the Athenaeum for an excellent buffet and Unilever
for its sponsorship.
