Help for students with burning ambition

Liverpool Regional Group: Kick-start Your Career
University of Liverpool, UK, February 2005

Bunsen burnerEvery February, the SCI Liverpool Regional Group holds a careers event for undergraduate and postgraduate students from Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores and Bangor Universities in the northwest of England. The informal format aims to bring the students into contact with successful industrialists from science-based companies in the region. The Regional Group is lucky to have so many Members willing to give up the evening freely to provide advice and answer questions.

Career insights
The students were greeted with a cold beer before a series of ten-minute presentations from a wide variety of scientists working locally. Each presenter gave an insight into their particular career path and current role, and was chosen to cover a range of jobs. Large pharmaceutical to small contract companies were represented with diverse positions from analysts to managers to research scientists. Advice on job applications and CV writing were also provided.

The presentations were followed by a buffet and wine where the students had the chance to informally ask all the questions brought up by the presentations. This is where Regional Group Members joined in sharing their experiences. Some were kept talking (and drinking) for several hours!

Feedback has been extremely positive, as for most students, the event represents a rare occasion to gain an understanding of the types of careers available to a chemistry graduate. As always the success of the event relies on people’s time and the understanding of their companies.

Therefore the Liverpool Regional Group Committee would like to thank the following: Unilever Research, StylaCats, Ineoschlor Chemicals, INyX Pharma, Bristol Myers-Squibb, SRG Labstaff, Four Delta Consulting, UK Business Systems — Lever Faberge, Graham Clarke, Mondi Karbasi-Esfahani, John Bridges, Philippa Clark, Paul Morris, Ken Rabone, Mark Dyas, and in particular Ian O’Neil of the chemistry department, University of Liverpool, for organising the venue and refreshments.
