SCI’s Liverpool Regional Group held its annual student prize presentation event at Runcorn Heath on 27 January 2006. Prizes were awarded to the best student graduating in chemistry at each of the universities in the Regional Group’s area. In addition, a prize is given for the Open University student achieving the best performance on the S205 Molecular Science course, and who lives within the Regional Group boundaries. Because the Open University academic year runs from February to November this award recognises achievement in 2004.

The prize winners, who each received a certificate, a cheque, one year’s SCI membership and an SCI pen, were:

  • Jayne Kenwright, Liverpool University;
  • Hayley Evans, Liverpool John Moores
    University (P/T );
  • Neil Harper, Liverpool John Moores
    University (F/T );
  • Steven Parry, University of Wales, Bangor;
  • Joanna Stevens, Open University.
Jayne Kenwright was backpacking in Australia, so had had a difficult choice between there and Runcorn, and Neil Harper was unable to travel from his home on the Isle of Man. It was, however, a pleasure to welcome the other three prize winners and their families and friends.

The prizes were presented by the Liverpool Group chairman, Alan Heaton, who thanked secretary Mike Pitts and committee member Marie Seddon for organising the event. He also asked Seddon to pass on his thanks to her company, Burgoynes, for sponsoring the event.

The prize winners will be the last from the Liverpool Regional Group since, after 125 years in operation and being the founding Regional Group of SCI, it is merging with Manchester to form the new Liverpool and North West Regional Group on 3 April 2006.

After the presentations Mike Pitts gave an interesting and enlightening talk on his career so far (click here to read it in full) and the part that SCI had played in it including what membership of the society meant to him. The evening concluded with a buffet.
