Young pioneers glimpse future prospects

Liverpool and North West Section: Kickstart your career Liverpool University, UK

annual careers meeting for students SCI new North West Regional Group held an annual careers meeting for students studying chemistry and other sciences at Liverpool University on 16 February 2006. The event followed the usual format of a series of short presentations in the lecture theatre followed by informal discussions over food and wine.

The presenters were introduced by the Regional Group chairman Alan Heaton who thanked Caroline Cordery and Mike Pitts for organising the meeting and Ian O’Neil for his key efforts in providing the food and drink.

Following tips on CV writing by Philippa Clark of recruitment specialist SRG and interview techniques by Andy Brigg and Matthew Rollinson of Lab Support, the remaining three speakers discussed their education and career paths. Hazel Davidson of Alcontrol, John Bridges of InYX and our Regional Group secretary, Mike Pitts of Reaxa, all informed and entertained the gathering.

There was an excellent turnout of more than 80 students. This included a party of 30 from the University of Wales, Bangor, in addition to those from Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores universities. The value to the students was apparent from the length of time that the informal questioning went on.

The SCI ‘commercials’ from Heaton and Pitts were obviously very effective, with quite a number of the students applying for SCI membership on the night. Clark agreed to her slides being placed on open access on the SCI North West Regional Group web site, (to follow) so please make a visit and get tips for improving your CV.

Next year’s event promises to be even bigger, since with the launch of the new Liverpool and North West Regional Group, the Manchester universities will also be participating. Indeed, both Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan universities have already offered to host a future event.
