Chemical engineering graduates
of the University of Manchester
Institute of Science and
Technology (UMIST) and Manchester
University are invited to
a ‘grand reunion’ on Friday 8
and Saturday 9 September to
celebrate the establishment of
the department 50 years ago
and the growth and development
of chemical engineering
teaching in Manchester.
Despite being the first place
in the UK, and arguably the
world, where chemical engineering
was taught (in the 1887
lecture series by George E
Davis), it was not until 1956
and the arrival of Frank Morton
that Manchester had its own
department of chemical engineering.
The old department is
now a school in the UK’s newest
university, but still resides in
the same building in which it
began life 50 years ago.
The Friday will involve a programme
of talks on the history
and contribution of chemical
engineering at Manchester.
There will also be an opportunity
to hear about and discuss
the future of chemical engineering
at Manchester in the light of
the profound changes in related
industries and the exciting
plans for the future of the new
University of Manchester. Saturday’s
programme will be more
informal, with plenty of time
for catching up with old friends.
All chemical engineering
graduates of both universities
are invited to join in. For more
information contact Lisa Harriman
at chemeng.reunion@manchester.ac.uk.
