Student prize giving 2006

Liverpool and North West Group, 22 November 2006

winnersAlmost 50 members, prize winners and their friends and family assembled at Chester Town Hall for the Liverpool and North West Group 2006 student prize giving, to honour the best students graduating in chemistry from universities within the area. In addition, the best performance on the Open University’s S205 Molecular Science Course in 2005 by a student living in the North West was also recognised.

The event was shared with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s North West Trust, which presented its Alfred Williamson Memorial prizes. We were pleased to welcome Dr Grahame Stanley, the Hon. Secretary/Treasurer of the NW Trust and the students’ tutors, Drs John Baxter (O.U.), Mike Beckett (Bangor), Ian Bradshaw (LJMU), and Dave Johnson (MMU).

The evening commenced with a most interesting, informative and entertaining tour of the Town Hall led by our guest of honour, Alderman David Evans, former leader of the Council. The honours boards listing the Mayors and Sheriffs of the City since the 1100s, contained some interesting comments after some of the names, one being Mayor for three years despite being described as unelected and another as slain!

Following a welcome and introductory remarks by the group Chairman, Professor Alan Heaton, David Evans (Senior Lecturer in Biology at Chester University) gave a short speech with pertinent comments on science and the need for more students to study such courses.

Marie Connor, the Group Hon. Secretary, then introduced the SCI Prize Winners who each received a certificate, cheque and one years membership of SCI from David.
Alan Heaton performed the same role for RSC Prize Winners who also received a certificate, cheque and one years membership of RSC. Alan concluded the proceedings by thanking David Evans and also Councillor David Mead, a Group Committee Member, for arranging the venue and Marie for her very efficient and splendid organisation of the event. Thanks are also due to her husband Sean for acting as photographer. Everyone then enjoyed an excellent buffet and drinks.
