Business Development Manager

12 month contract with possible extension to permanent role.  Applications for part time working will be considered

Enthusiastic and self-motivated individual with previous experience in a scientific sales role or scientific industrial setting sought to help us to grow SCI membership and to identify and generate new academic and corporate partnerships.  The ideal candidate will be a results-driven, confident presenter who is able to communicate with scientists and business people at all levels to promote SCI’s aims and objectives.  Candidates with a specialist interest in one of SCI’s key areas of Energy, Environment, Agri-Food, Health or Materials are particularly encouraged to apply.

Happy to travel to industrial and academic sites and events around the UK, the business development manager will also be required to carry out desk based research to map new opportunities and key contacts within a defined regional or technical area, and to define their own plan of work in communication with the Membership Manager.  Some out of hours travel and activity expected.  

SCI is a unique multi-science and multidisciplinary forum where science meets business.  SCI promotes innovation and education via forums and networks which support the delivery of our charitable aim to advance the commercial application of chemistry related sciences into business.

Established by Royal Charter in 1881 by a prominent group of forward thinking Scientists, Inventors and Business people our founder members went on to set up major businesses producing many of the daily products we recognise today.

SCI members share and exchange information, ideas, innovations and research, and have access to a growing network of member specialists from sectors as diverse as food and agrisciences, environment, energy, materials and health and well-being.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

a)   Grow SCI membership

Increase SCI membership within defined regional or market area.  Specifically:

  • Corporate:
    • Create a map of corporate and industrial connections in a defined regional or market area as agreed with line manager
    • Work with the Membership Manager to generate a package of benefits suitable for corporate partnerships
    • Using agreed presentation and marketing tools, generate increased membership via acquisition of corporate partnerships with target companies 
  • Academic:
    • Create a map of academic institutions and relevant departments in a defined regional or market area as agreed with line manager
    • Work with the Membership Manager to generate a package of benefits suitable for academic partnerships
    • Using agreed presentation and marketing tools, generate academic partnerships with target institutions 
  • Events and exhibitions
    • Represent SCI at events including at SCI exhibition stands
    • Deliver presentations about SCI membership at events and conferences
    • Attend networking events in a capacity to generate new members and raise SCI’s profile

 b)   Raise SCI profile

  • Generate interest in SCI Group activities and overall aims amongst technical corporate and academic links
  • Leverage relationship with Corporate and Academic Partners to increase visibility of SCI activities

 c)   Support SCI Regional or Technical groups

  • Help to promote SCI events and activities run by SCI Regional and Technical Groups in the defined regional or market area to increase delegate numbers
  • Attract exhibitors for Group activities

d)   Project support and new business development

  • Feedback ideas for new business development to Membership Manager
  • As agreed, coordinate the set up of new projects relating to the defined regional area
