Good communication skills, a diverse network and an awareness of the wider context of your work are essential elements for getting your career off to a great start.
Attending SCI Young Researchers in Agrisciences 2014, the annual one-day event at the University of Reading organised by SCI BioResources Group on 3 July, will boost all these. The call for offers of 20 minute oral papers, five-minute 'flash' presentations and posters is now open and the programme is filling. Please note that the call deadline is 6 June!
This will be the fifth in the current series of conferences for PhD researchers and post-docs working on any topic related to crop production, protection or utilisation of harvested materials for food or non-food use. The event provides an opportunity to present results or plans; gain new contacts, ideas and insights; and raise your profile through interdisciplinary networking.
At previous events prizes have been won for papers or posters on topics including: the merits of agroforestry systems in providing ecosystem services (environmental benefits) while maintaining crop productivity; understanding the systems wheat uses to repair DNA; improving methods of seed storage on African farms; and novel methods of protecting potato crops from nematodes.
Other topics presented have included carbohydrate biochemistry, biopesticides, plant tannins, root architecture, bioethanol production, metabolomics, spectroscopic analysis, environmental stress effects on crops, insecticide mode of action, mycotoxins, soil erosion and insect pollinators.
